Pacific University Annual Report, 2016-2017

Pacific University for Tomorrow

Pacific University is a place of discovery, of vision, of opportunity, and of care.

Founded nearly 168 years ago as a school for orphans at the end of the Oregon Trail, Pacific’s foundation is in providing care and opportunity for those who had none.

Our mission today — inspiring students who think, care, create, and pursue justice — is the outgrowth of those roots.

Pacific is a place where students embark on a journey that will change their lives and the lives of those around them.

Our History

Tabitha Brown portraitTabitha Brown was a 66-year-old widow when she made her harrowing journey across the Oregon Trail. When she arrived in Forest Grove, she found a burgeoning community filled with children orphaned en route to a new life.

Her vision was to build a school — and a home — to care for those children and give them the opportunity their parents had imagined.

That school would eventually give rise to Pacific University, the first university chartered in Oregon, and the beginning of who we are today.

Our Students

Pacific attracts a diverse student body. Most of our undergraduates hail from the West Coast and Hawai‘i, while our graduate programs are highly competitive, drawing students from around the globe.

Our standards are high, and we attract academic high achievers — but we also look for students who are well-rounded and eager to learn and grow. We value students who will benefit most from the Pacific experience, and we believe in the importance of access to education for all.

Our Alumni

At Pacific, undergraduate and graduate students alike find a community of professors who are mentors and friends, as well as classmates who become like family. And the skills — and networks — they gain at Pacific serve them throughout their lifetimes.

Our alumni find success in their careers and are meaningful contributors to their communities. They gain economic mobility, capitalize on opportunity, and build a foundation for the future of their families.

They are teachers and artists, doctors and social workers, entrepreneurs and civic leaders.

The Power of Giving

Philanthropic support is critical to allowing us to continue to advance our mission. The support of our donors allows us to increase the scholarship and financial aid packages that make it possible for students to start — and finish — their years at Pacific. It allows us to recruit the best faculty, enhance our facilities, invest in new programs, and further support our students.

Through Lead On: The Campaign for Tomorrow at Pacific University, your gifts to Pacific will enhance learning opportunities for students and create a brighter tomorrow.
