Chad Toomey 1994

Chad Toomey ’94 has accepted a firefighter position with the Forest Grove Fire Department. Toomey has worked at the Pacific University Outback since 1997 and also served as a volunteer firefighter. “It is such a privilege to be accepted into this fine staff of professionals,” he said. “At the same time, I will be saying farewell to a wonderfully supportive organization — Pacific University. These are exciting times!”

Paul Berman O.D. ’75 was honored at the White House on Oct. 2, 2012, for his work as founder and global clinical adviser of the Special Olympics Lions Clubs International Opening Eyes program, in which volunteers provide vision tests, as well as protective sports goggles and prescription eyeglasses as needed, to all Special Olympics participants. Dr. Berman developed the program in 1991, during his term as president of the AOA Sports Vision Section, and the Lions Clubs International Foundation assumed sponsorship in 2001. A widely recognized sports vision practitioner, Berman has a practice in Hackensack, N.J., and has received many professional recognitions for his work.

Eddie Hargreaves and Jennifer Hastings married Oct. 13, 2014. They live in Modesto, Calif., where Eddie works for Apple Inc.

Sara G. (Hewitt) Lachman '99

Sara G. (Hewitt) Lachman was named one of the 2014 Women in the Law by Michigan Lawyers Weekly. Lachman’s practice includes real estate litigation, employment litigation, unfair competition and non-compete cases, and professional licensing disputes. In addition to her Pacific University degree, she is a graduate of Northern Arizona University and has a law degree form the University of Michigan Law School.

Jennifer Baker '99

Jennifer Baker has been named deputy district director of the Portland Small Business Administration. She has worked as an economic development specialist in the office since 2011 and previously worked in business management and international trade. She has a master’s degree in internal policy from the Monterey Institute of International Studies.

Robert Biswas-Diener MS '99

Robert Biswas-Diener MS recently published a book, The Upside of Your Dark Side, on the counterintuitive thesis that anger, guilt and other psychological unpleasantness is actually beneficial. The book has been featured in Forbes, O Magazine, Success, New York Magazine, Chicago Tribune, CNN, NPR, and other media outlets.

Tiffany Christian '99

Tiffany Christian completed her preliminary exams in November 2014 and is now a PhD candidate in American Studies at Washington State University.

Jeri Greenberg '99

Jeri Greenberg and Brendan Finn were married at the Portland Art Museum in September 2014. The couple lives in Portland, where Jeri is a faculty member at Oregon Health & Science University.

Erik Syrstad '99

Erik Syrstad invented the Imaging Dispersive Energy Analyzer (IDEA), allowing next-generation measurements of the space environment from orbiting satellites. Syrstad works with Utah State University’s Space Dynamics Laboratory, which was issued a patent for the invention.
