Chad Toomey 1994

Chad Toomey ’94 has accepted a firefighter position with the Forest Grove Fire Department. Toomey has worked at the Pacific University Outback since 1997 and also served as a volunteer firefighter. “It is such a privilege to be accepted into this fine staff of professionals,” he said. “At the same time, I will be saying farewell to a wonderfully supportive organization — Pacific University. These are exciting times!”

Paul Berman O.D. ’75 was honored at the White House on Oct. 2, 2012, for his work as founder and global clinical adviser of the Special Olympics Lions Clubs International Opening Eyes program, in which volunteers provide vision tests, as well as protective sports goggles and prescription eyeglasses as needed, to all Special Olympics participants. Dr. Berman developed the program in 1991, during his term as president of the AOA Sports Vision Section, and the Lions Clubs International Foundation assumed sponsorship in 2001. A widely recognized sports vision practitioner, Berman has a practice in Hackensack, N.J., and has received many professional recognitions for his work.

Shannon Wetzel is the deputy general counsel for Mentor Graphics in Wilsonville, Ore. She earned her law degree from the Northwestern School of Law at Lewis & Clark College in 1998.

Joe Morelock MAT '93

Joe Morelock MAT is the executive director of secondary education in the Lake Oswego (Ore.) School District. He previously was an administrator in the Canby School District, where he earned an Apple Distinguished Educator award. He is enrolled in the Educational Leadership Doctorate Program at Portland State University and has spoken across the globe on innovative teaching practices. He also served as an adjunct professor at Willamette University for six years. Trilingual, he started his career as a Spanish and computer science teacher and volleyball coach.

Jon Payne is the senior manager of business operations for Cisco Systems G.K. in Japan. He earned a master of business administration degree from Thunderbird School of Global Management.

Veronica Roberts is multi-operation specialist with Boeing in Seattle. She and her husband, Jay, have two children, Kaleb, 13, and Dylan, 10.

Kathy (Tatum) Hawkes OT '94

Kathy (Tatum) Hawkes OT retired in January 2014 after 19 years of working in schools. After retiring, she was offered a four-month position on Oahu, working mostly with pre-kindergarten through third-grade students, while her husband Rick volunteered building houses with Habitat for Humanity. The couple welcomed a new grandson, Oliver, in April 2014, and also got to “meet” their granddaughter, via ultrasound, due in November.

Molly (Peterson) Smith is a third-grade teacher with the North Powder (Ore.) School District. She and her husband Tim Smith ’93 have two children, Bryson, 17, and Spencer, 12.
