Chad Toomey 1994

Chad Toomey ’94 has accepted a firefighter position with the Forest Grove Fire Department. Toomey has worked at the Pacific University Outback since 1997 and also served as a volunteer firefighter. “It is such a privilege to be accepted into this fine staff of professionals,” he said. “At the same time, I will be saying farewell to a wonderfully supportive organization — Pacific University. These are exciting times!”

Paul Berman O.D. ’75 was honored at the White House on Oct. 2, 2012, for his work as founder and global clinical adviser of the Special Olympics Lions Clubs International Opening Eyes program, in which volunteers provide vision tests, as well as protective sports goggles and prescription eyeglasses as needed, to all Special Olympics participants. Dr. Berman developed the program in 1991, during his term as president of the AOA Sports Vision Section, and the Lions Clubs International Foundation assumed sponsorship in 2001. A widely recognized sports vision practitioner, Berman has a practice in Hackensack, N.J., and has received many professional recognitions for his work.

Reggie Torres and his wife, Ola, welcomed baby Raider Douglas Kaleikoaho’okamaha’o Mumy Torres on July 23, 2014. He weighed 7 pounds, 4 ounces, and measured 18.75 inches. Kapua Keefe ’07 is an aunt.

Staci Gregorio '10

Staci Gregorio has been invited to the Indianapolis Women’s Pro Showcase, an invitation-only combine run by Chris Warren of Warren Sports International/Integrity Sports Corporation. She will train from August to January, then travel with her teammates to Australia playing against teams in the European Basketball League. Gregorio was a unanimous 2014 First Team All-PCAC selection for San Diego Mesa College, averaging more than 13 points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal per game.

Nicole Mangiboyat Kurata graduated from the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawai‘i. She married Landon Kurata ’10, PT ’13 in March 2014.

Robbie Pock MFA '10

Robbie Pock MFA ’10 led a new writer’s workshop at Periscope Books & Tutoring in Forest Grove. The workshop focused on short-form writing, including poetry, stories and non-fiction vignettes. Pock has been writing for 13 years and has been published in numerous publications.

Wilber Ramirez-Rodriguez DHS '10

Wilber Ramírez-Rodríguez DHS ’10 was featured in “Strength through Adversity,” an article in the May-June 2014 issue of Access magazine, a publication of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA). The story profiles his background providing dental care for underserved populations, including his internship in the Peruvian jungle. Ramírez-Rodríguez is a faculty member in Pacific’s School of Dental Health Science.
